Run pactl set-source-mute @DEFAULT_SOURCE@ 1 to mute the microphone and pactl set-source-mute @DEFAULT_SOURCE@ 0 to unmute it.

01Command

Command
$ pactl set-source-mute @DEFAULT_SOURCE@ 1

02What it does

@DEFAULT_SOURCE@ always targets whichever microphone is currently the default input, so you don't have to look up device names. Use pactl list sources to see every input device, or set-source-mute @DEFAULT_SOURCE@ toggle to flip the state — handy when bound to a keyboard shortcut as a global mic switch. This mutes at the audio server level, which most apps respect, but desktop indicators may not reflect a mute made purely from the CLI.

!Warning: Muting in PulseAudio is software-level; a compromised system or an app using the device directly can bypass it, and you should still verify the mute state before sensitive conversations.
