Improve laptop battery life with TLP
Install and enable TLP so Linux automatically applies power-saving settings for battery operation; check results with tlp-stat.
Run `sudo apt install tlp && sudo systemctl enable --now tlp`, then reboot or replug the charger to activate it.
01Command
Command
$ sudo apt install tlp && sudo systemctl enable --now tlp02What it does
TLP is a power management daemon that automatically tunes USB autosuspend, CPU frequencies, Wi-Fi power saving and more depending on whether the laptop runs on battery or AC. It works out of the box with sensible defaults and is the go-to fix for Linux laptops that discharge faster than expected. `tlp-stat -b` shows the current battery state and any configured charge thresholds.
03Risk
!Warning: TLP conflicts with power-profiles-daemon and similar tools — GNOME's Power Mode switch may stop working while TLP runs. Disable one of them; do not run both.
04Undo
Undo
$ sudo systemctl disable --now tlp05Sources
