Test Your Internet Connection with macOS networkQuality

macOS has a hidden networkQuality tool that measures download, upload, and responsiveness without any app.

Run `networkQuality -v` in Terminal to run Apple's built-in network quality test with verbose details.

01Command

Command
$ networkQuality -v

02What it does

networkQuality contacts Apple's measurement servers and reports download speed, upload speed, and Responsiveness (RPM) — a measure of how well the connection handles multiple simultaneous streams, which matters far more than raw Mbps for video calls. The -v flag adds details like the test servers and interface used. Unlike a typical speed test it deliberately saturates the link in both directions at once, which is why video calls drop on some connections that look fast in other tests.

!Warning: The test pushes heavy traffic for about 15 seconds; anything else using the network during the run will skew the results.
